Aneesa's story

"I want to be an active mother who isn’t afraid to join in with her children and play football or exercise with them."

There are two barriers that stopped me from getting active. The first was my mood, as if I am feeling down I find it hard to motivate myself to get up and move and the second is time.

As a busy working mother, it’s as though you have to schedule in time specifically to exercise. So often if no one is inspiring you to get up, it’s all too easy not to do anything at all.

I got motivated when I realised I was starting to look and feel unhealthy. I want to be an active mother who isn’t afraid to join in with her children and play football or exercise with them.

It’s just about having the energy and feeling good within.

I’m only 43, still got half my life ahead of me, so looking after myself is important not only for me but for my family as well, as I am borderline diabetic and don’t want to be on medications.

When I’ve not been able to go to the gym I’ve been squeezing in Instagram and Zoom workouts first thing in the morning. That way I can shower straight after and not interrupt my day.

If I can’t do that, I will leave the car and walk to wherever I need to go. I then make a point of having my music on full blast when I am cooking so I can dance in the kitchen.

Before I used to feel odd doing it around the kids but now either they don’t notice me, or I don’t notice them. I am still a bit anxious about going to my gym again once it does reopen as my dad is 80 and I don’t want to risk his health.

Working out in a park can be great though, as well as all the online sessions available. I know its not quite the same, but if you have another person with you and you’re able to exercise together safely, it makes it a lot more fun as then you can talk about it after or think about other options.

Sometimes it’s just about finding what it is that works for who we are and what suits our personalities.
